Crafting other things for survival is absolutely allowed in the game! To give a few examples of things players have already had their characters made to give you an idea: rosehip/pine needle syrup for medicinal purposes, a meat smoker, stills for making alcohol/primitive alcohol production, along with traps for animals, and even attempts at making gunpowder/ammunition.
